31 I The most valuable heritage lies beyond the mind

In this heart-to-heart talk, Dr. Harbhajan Singh speaks about things that are more valuable than any worldly wishes. While the latter are temporary, the higher values of life are ever-lasting. So, he requests us to decide for a good life and rediscover the spiritual heritage that lies deep within us. This is possible if we never cease to learn, to be focused on the goal and to render selfless service to humanity and to the Creator.

Dear brothers and sisters!

If we really want to know the competency of the Master (inside), then we should go into the sanctuary of the heart and think to our utmost what we really need. And that much – that what you need that will be delivered to you. 

Greatest of all is the greatness of the Master. You come into the world to receive that heritage (as a) gift, and it is in His hand. The gift is in the hand of the Giver. So for this, (to attain) the higher values of life is only possible with our contact with the Godpower. So we have to rise above, we have to think above all those labels.

Masters tell us that there is only One who is related to you in the world. He is your fast friend and that one is within you and He will answer whatever you require from Him. All others are so-called friends in the world. 

The world is full of foolish people. Those who are full of their shortcomings, but still are proud of themself – they are foolish. Those who want to misuse your goodness, they are not your friends. Once this goodness is spoiled, they are no longer your friends. 

Masters come into the world to remove the misunderstanding and ignorance among His (God’s) children. Their cause always remained different (from the affairs of the world), very different. They said one and the same thing all the time, but all the time people could not understand the very secret of this thing. People try thousands ways. But Masters tell us to follow, to try only one way and once for all. 

So His lesson is very important. Forgetting it, we neither live in this world nor in the beyond. We hang in the way. We (have to) leave this world, there is no exception to the rule. And we have no place in the beyond where to live. So naturally we have to hang somewhere else, this is a truth. This is why Masters say, „Believe the testimony of the competent Masters, because they always tell the truth.” Whatever they see, they tell us. 

In this world I have seen the cowboys are grazing the cows in the field. And I have also seen, the tiger also grazing the cows. It is a big difference! The value which – the price which the cow has to pay is priceless.

My Master (Kirpal Singh) said, He has seen rich persons becoming pauper and rolling down from the palace to the street. And I have also seen gods and goddesses, avataras rolling down from the heaven to the hell. Neither in the physical world nor in the astral – there is no life. It is a reality. There is no life. You see people enjoying in this world and you also see the same phenomena with those powers who could not get rid of the lust, enjoyment and all sensual pleasures. The whole world is affected; three worlds are affected by the one and the same problem. 

Mind does not leave the body – either one bears the physical, astral or the causal (body). By rising above the astral body and going into the causal body and rising above the causal body one can only find the cause and effect. The real bread of life and water of life is given there – when you know the cause and effect, then you are given the water of life and bread of life. 

And those who surrender to the Master(power) maybe in the physical, astral, or in any form, they are given the bread of life there and then. It is a law. Because for a true disciple, wherever he lives, he lives in the heaven. For him this physical world is the heaven. If he is asked to go into the astral (plane) there is the heaven for him, a very separate heaven for him: The sweet remembrance of his Master is the heaven. 

So I mean to say you, (if you) really want to know the competency of your Master that lies with your expectation. More you think of Him, more He is. Less you think of Him, less He is (for you). He cannot be said (described in words). Kabir says, „If you say He is twice, He is two, it is just like telling – calling names to His greatness.” If you tell, “He is one” – still He is not one. Because “one” has also beginning and end. But what is He? He is what He is. We cannot add, we cannot abstract anything from Him.

Your wishes, your enjoyments, good acts, bad acts and all (what) you demand from the world and all you wish from the world that is buried under your feet. It is up to you how you expect them. But the competency of the Master(power) lies in the sanctuary of the heart; it can be your mental state, but it is very good that God has not put heart and head together, otherwise man could never understand Him. 

You want to begin a good life – then where is the problem? You must search for it. It is up to you to decide for a good thing or a bad thing. But once you decide for a good thing, it is again up to you either to continue or not to continue it. Our contact with God which can glorify our life, is within. Why search it outside? Why turn your heart to the world and for what purpose, when the Masterpower within you wants to fulfill all your wishes? He wants to give you eternal happiness. So we have to decide. What are those facts by following which we can lead a very perfect, noble and charging life? 

Yesterday I told you, whatever you expect from the world is only a dust. Your wishes are dust and these can be very easily met with (by the lower powers), when you are underdeveloped. The miraculous powers are dust, astral dirt, astral dust, which mixes with the (physical) dust and dust speaks of the dust. And what do you get? Nothing but a dust, and you again will remain dust. Nothing we get in the world, neither here nor do we get help from anybody else in the world. You come empty handed and go empty handed, 

Kabir says, „My two hands are full of sweets. If I win over my Master, if I win over my Beloved, I belong to Him. If my Beloved wins over me I, become a permanent lover of Him.“ So the Beloved is only the Masterpower within. Only with Him we have the beautiful body, we can create good thoughts, we can be useful to lots of people in the world and by setting our life we can create a living example throughout the world. We can justify our Father not only here, but everywhere, and those Powers who came into the world, they did it. Their teachings are there, and we must bow down before those teachings.

You are outside and how does it benefit you or benefits the One who is staying within? It benefits none. The love of the Master is within you. You are the true expression of His love. Once you have that heritage, He will always keep you beside. He will save you from all ill-feelings whatever it may be. He will even save you from the shortcomings in your daily life. 

We say, “We are proud of Him”, but did we ever think, “Is He proud of us?” No, never. Because we are not sincere to ourselves. How can He be proud of us? He cannot be. 

Each day we pray to Him. I tell you, He does not hear it, because in praying you have wishes. The power who fulfills the wish, is not that Power, I tell you. These are other forces. They will only steal your attention. You are caught in the mirror and then you cannot go out of this. 

We say, “We are happy, we are happy with our God, God helps us very much (when our wishes are fulfilled).” But that is not God. If you have longing and yearning for Him and you do not have any wish and you forget how to pray to Him, (when) your thoughts become thoughtless thought, then there is no tongue, no thought – (then) He hears you. He will come to you and will give you sweet vibration and radiation. And you will feel drowning in your life. You do not get the corner of the ocean, you feel being drowned in the ocean of life.

Whenever He comes, He will let you know the shortcomings of the child. Then you cry for help. When you cry for help, He gives you help and then you are able to overcome your problem. So the Masterpower comes into the world only to correct His child and He doesn’t want that His child is more identified into the world. 

You fulfill many wishes in the world. What you got? Very sincerely – if we understand what we got, nothing is in our hand, nothing is in our heart and nothing is in our head except the very dirt. We remember those things and try to have some enjoyments from those things. But it is lost. These are momentary things and man has forgotten. 

Rabia Basri, a Muslim divine, was asked once, „Do you make prayer beforehand or do you make it after the arrival of your Beloved?“ She said, „I make prayer after His arrival.“ And she was asked how she knew that He has arrived. She said, „My whole body is thrilled in sweet vibration when I start to forget everything. And when I completely forget it, then I cannot stand on my legs. (It is like) somebody comes to throw me on the earth. My whole body becomes senseless.“ – (They asked) “He comes and what does He give you then?” She says, „He gives me that very thing which I never possessed in my life and He gives me that thing which I never knew in my life.“ 

That is something that cannot be explained by way of mouth or in writing. It is something else. It is not that heritage which you can easily exhaust. It is a gift of God. Everything else you see in the world is only a shadow. What is the shadow? So far you are in the body you are having a shadow. When you leave the body, the shadow will leave itself. The shadow is due to you – these things with which you are so much identified are only a mere shadow. When you come out of it, it is no more. 

The love of the world is not the love of God. There the Masterpower is not happy, because if we love the world for the sake of God, then it is love. For the love of God, for the sake of the love of God even this can be the love in the world. Then you will love the world in a very other way, not this way you have started with it. Otherwise this love, you are very much identified with, is mere an attachment. That will drag you down and down and put into the hell – hell of thoughts, thoughts are the hell.

Everyone is chosen by the thoughts. Thoughts are very potent. If throughout your life you are not able to correct your thoughts, the thoughts are again put into action and deeds. So the problem starts from the thought. Those powers, negative and positive power working overhead all the times, they chose their disciples with their thoughts (according to their thoughts). Once they are caught, they cannot leave those powers unless they overcome the old thoughts.

She (Rabia Basri) was asked, „Since you remain immerged, maybe you are seeing the effect of the inner visions and you wish to go to the heaven or do you want to – or are you dreadful, you are afraid of the hell?“ She said, „If I am afraid of the hell, I surrender myself that God may put me into the hell forever. If I wish to reside in the heaven, then I surrender myself – that the doors of the heaven may be closed for me forever. I have no wish to reside in the hell or the heaven. Nobody knows my purpose.

…different task for me. I only see the glory of my Master whose beauty is par excellence. There is no wonder in the world anywhere where anything, any place, or any vision can match with the beauty of my Master. I looked into the eyes of the whole world. Nobody could satisfy my wish. And my Master, my beloved Master with a single eye, with a single glance, satisfied my wish once for all. So to whom should I obey? Naturally I have to obey the One who is within me!”

“I have seen the cat carrying the dog.” (Quotation from Kabir) It is one delusion in the world. The nature of the cat is negative. What does it with the mouse? It brings down its attention. It plays with the mouse, it brings down the attention of the mouse and then kills it. It plays with the mouse and then kills it. This is the nature of the cat. And who is the dog? Dog is now our soul which is mind- ridden and is full of greed, lust and attachment. A dog is greedy and lusty. That is the condition of our soul now. So things are going very opposite to the reality. Inside, the cat is carrying the dog. Here the dog runs after the cat. A big difference, like that of sky and earth.

So if you go within, you will experience very different things within. And whatever you experience within, this is a reality, (outside) it is a reflection of the reality. When you look into the mirror your face will appear to you. It is a shadow, but it will be opposite. The shadow is – your reflection is not the same as you are standing before. So here is the same thing in the world. The reality is opposite to its reflection. There is a much difference in listening and seeing. If you see yourself, then you say, “Here is the reality. Everything else in the world is false.“

If you set your life, your mind will gaze at your astral beauty. He has stolen everything. Now the light and life has become the heritage of the mind. He steals the light from you and surrenders your life wherever it wants and each moment we are going very far away from the path. 

What the mind does, nobody knows. Anyone – by the grace of the Master – if anyone has seen the mind, he always saw a big snake. When it is controlled, it is in the basket. But when it goes out of  control and is out of the basket, then you cannot control it, you may try your level best. All Holy Scriptures, all competent Masters said with one opinion that mind has the same form as that of the snake. As the cat is the sister of the lion, tiger, so is the mind like that of the snake. 

You may feed the snake every day with milk, but it will try to bite you always. He cannot be faithful to you at any time. Because his nature is negative. Whenever you create positive thoughts in you, it will try to bite you. So far you create more and more negative thoughts for him, he will be very happy with you. He will fulfill all your wishes.

So today we should have some heart-to-heart talk. We have learned a lot and maybe everything benefits you or not – this is up to you. But whatever does not benefit you, I think, there is nothing to hide, we should throw it away. 

If you think of the evil, if you think of the sin, if you think what you did, you will never overcome it. Simply forget it, then stand and find the way. So this is the best solution, this is the right solution. 

Otherwise there is much place (where) you can accumulate the dirt inside. Already beforehand there are reservoirs which are full of good deeds and bad deeds and we cannot get rid of it. And how to overcome this very problem? Only that Godpower has blessed us with the right solution even in the man-body. So this is also up to the competency of the Master. 

As yesterday I told you, there is no end to His competency and there is no end to learning, and there is no end to seeing, and there is no end to the devotion and there is no end to selfless service for Him. How many things have you to acquire? This is only possible when you stand, forget what was there and what was not there. But stop and follow the way. 

All these things are put already in sequence. They are not scattering. This is our attention which has scattered the whole things. To find some solution you may go into the world here or there and there and there, but to search for all those things together they lie all at one place. 

Have you ever seen during daytime lamb and tiger sitting together? They cannot sit together. But with the help of the Masterpower you will see the light, life and the love, they all reside together. And this you can experience in the life of a competent Master. He is the abode of this virtue, I tell you. He gives you light, life and love. If you get all those virtues then you are a perfect, then you are the very dearest child to your Father. You will never forget Him and He will never forget you. This is a start in the life.

The food which is digested gives you strength. So, whatever is said, it is from Him and not from me. So, take it at as a turning point in your life and be happy!
